Alison Saar transforms found objects to create sculpture that reflects themes of social identity, history, and spirituality. This installation features a figure of Higiea, the Greek goddess of health and sanitation, as a monument to domestic workers, janitors, and others whose labor is often taken for granted. Mostly invisible, these people, many of color, devote themselves to cleaning and maintainng spaces every day, putting themselves particularly at risk during the Covid-19 pandemic. Incorporating roughhewn wood, lights, bottles, and other urban detritus, Saar's Higiea is a powerful totemic feature inspired by those whose life stories are both ordinary and heroic at the same time.
