This sketch for N C Wyeth's First published illustration was made when he had been studying with Howard Pyle for only four months, and before he ever traveled to the West. The energetic motion of the bucking bronco and the expert rider captured the appeal of the Wild West for Americans in the early 1900s. The final version landed on the cover of one of the nation's most popular magazines, launching Wyeth's extraordinary career as an illustrator of outdoor scenes.
