1915 Irene & Vernon Castle |
Irene and Vernon became one of the most popular ballroom dance teams of the early 20th century, introducing the one-step, fox-trot, castle polka, castle walk, and hesitation waltz. Irene is also credited with creating the fashion for bobbed hair. Vernon earned the Croix de Guerre after flying 3000 combat missions in the Great War. He was killed in a crash, training American pilots in Texas. After his death, Irene retired from dancing. |
