1957-11 1 Our new den (2nd floor, looks out on driveway), 204 Highgate St, Needham |
The house was built during WW II "by left-handed carpenters," and was previously owned by the Lumsden family. Pete Jr recalls Dale Lumsden telling him at a NHS '66 reunion that his uncle or maybe grandfather owned it. . The house came with an unfinished attic; the staircase arose in the middle of it. There was supposed to be space for a bedroom on each side and a bath in the middle, but not so. A dormer expanded the space over the small bedroom in the back, but there was no dormer on this side or the middle. . A bath (lacking the height for a shower) was shoehorned into the front of the larger side, with a new master bedroom in the back, with the dormer. There was only room for this den, a large closet at the top of the stairs, and a second closet between the first and the bath. The den provided access via nifty hanging trap doors and a low closet to storage under the eaves. . All this happened in time for Andrea to have the smaller back bedroom formerly shared by Pete Jr & Dan, and for us boys to share the old master bedroom. |
