On mission 7, April 19, 1944, the flak was the worst Jack had ever experienced ... stench of the powder from the exploding anti-aircraft shells ... never been so frightened, before or since ... paralyzed with fear for a while. "There was suddenly a flow of warmth that went through my entire body. I honestly felt that I was experiencing the presence of God. I knew that I was going to survive..."
A while after that mission, Jack got out the little Bible that his mother had given to him when he entered the service in 1942. Passages in the Book of Psalms gave him added confidence that he required for his survival. Everyone in his tent soon asked to borrow the Bible.
